Earlier this evening, a van caught fire at 30th Street and Fifth Avenue. A reader who sent us some photos around 6:30 p.m. said, "Burned for 10 minutes before FDNY arrived. Area bars are now surprisingly empty for St. Patrick's Day."
Another person took a picture and Tweeted, "A car bomb exploded on 5th ave. I counted 6 cans of propane." The FDNY told us the call about the fire came in at 6:11 p.m.; when we asked about whether the fire seemed suspicious, the FDNY said there were two cylinders but it's unclear what was in the them (propane, acetylene, etc.).
