The FAA and the Joint Terrorism Task Force are investigating a sighting of an unmanned aerial vehicle near JFK yesterday afternoon. According to the AP, an Alitalia pilot was flying a Boeing 777 at an altitude of 1,500 feet between four and five miles southeast of the airport when he caught a horrifying glimpse of The Future. "We saw a drone, a drone aircraft," the pilot told aircraft controllers.
A source described the aircraft to the Post as "a black done about a meter square, with helicopter rotors on the corners," which sounds slightly bigger than many of the drones currently available to hobbyists for purchase.
Of course, perhaps the aircraft was just a Crazy Bunch of Meddling Teens, or retired laser pointer enthusiasts. CBS quotes a man who drives an airport shuttle van as saying that he sees kids frequently flying model aircraft near the airport: "I see it many times. Sometimes, I see them flying so high."
And who knows? Maybe one of those kids will grow up to be president.
