In the past 48 hours, six pedestrians have been fatally struck by drivers in New York City, according to the NYPD. The crashes were spread across Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. So far, two drivers have been arrested, according to the department.
The carnage began Wednesday morning in Flushing.
Lin Zhisheng, 67, was walking on Sanford Avenue near Main Street about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday when the 69-year-old driver of a Volkswagen Jetta hit him while turning right into a parking garage on that block, police said in a release. Zhisheng died a day later at NY Presbyterian Hospital in Queens.
That same morning just before 10 a.m., Xue You, a 75-year-old Sunset Park resident, was crossing 52nd Street when the driver of a white Jeep driving southbound on Eighth Avenue hit her while making a left turn at 52nd Street, according to police.
In that crash, cops arrested the driver, 21-year-old Ida Gjona, for failing to yield to a pedestrian and a right of way violation, police said in a release.
About 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Brendan Gill, 85, was crossing Third Avenue near 39th Street in Sunset Park when a 24-year-old box truck driver struck him while traveling southbound on the avenue, according to police. Gill was pronounced dead at NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn.
Just before 5 p.m. Thursday, a 26-year-old woman was killed in SoHo.
A Ferraro Foods truck driver began to back up on Broadway near Howard Street facing southbound, when the driver struck her while she was crossing Broadway west to east, according to police and a witness.
Witness Nancy Lu told Gothamist she saw the woman, who's name has not been released, face down, and partially underneath the right rear tire of the truck with blood near her head.
"It's incredibly heartbreaking," she said in a Twitter message. "I'm really feeling for her family."
In Hell's Kitchen about 4:45 a.m. Friday morning, a unidentified man walking northbound on 10th Avenue at 49th Street was struck by the 58-year-old driver of a private sanitation truck, NYPD spokesperson Arlene Muniz confirmed.
At first, Muniz said preliminary investigations revealed he had been walking outside of the crosswalk when the truck driver, 58, was turning left onto West 49th Street. But the NYPD later announced officers arrested the driver, Robert Alford of New Jersey, and the man had been inside a marked crosswalk.
Alford was arrested for failing to yield to a pedestrian and exercise due care, according to the NYPD.
Less than two hours later, drivers of a truck, Jeep and Honda hit Andres Stylianou, 57, in Gowanus, at Third Avenue and Seventh Street. Stylianou was crossing Third Avenue from east to west when the truck driver hit him while driving northbound, and the other two vehicles struck him going southbound, police said in a release Friday.
NYPD spokesperson Muniz said he had been crossing mid-block during the crash. But early findings in traffic crashes often change, as with the crash in Hell's Kitchen the same morning.
Pedestrian deaths are known to increase in December, but the last two days have been particularly deadly, Transportation Alternatives spokesperson Joe Cutrufo told Gothamist.
"This is not unusual to see pedestrian deaths jump in December, but what we've seen over the last couple of days is more than average," Cutrufo said. "I think in a crowded city, we all need to think about the people around us and take a moment and understand that driving in a dense urban environment like this has potentially deadly consequences."
Cutrufo added, "When we see a spike in deaths like this, it's a reminder that cars and trucks are essentially an invasive species. ... Our streets should be designed in a way that protect people where safety is a top priority."
At least three of the pedestrians killed were elderly, with one man's age yet to be released. On Monday, another elderly woman was killed just four blocks from her home on Monday in Sheepshead Bay, Bklyner reported.
Two of the six deaths since Wednesday occurred in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.
The pedestrian deaths come about a week after the de Blasio administration launched a new campaign targeting men driving trucks and SUVs — since men have been behind the wheel for more than three-quarters of fatal crashes in recent years, and 41 percent of them were driving trucks or SUVs.
There have been 114 pedestrian fatalities in NYC through Thursday, the Department of Transportation confirmed to Gothamist. That's four more than the same time period last year, and 10 more compared to 2017. Including the pedestrian deaths on Friday, 116 pedestrians have died in 2019.
