Until a change in state law in June, they were only in operation from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays.

So far this year, 189 people have been killed by vehicles compared to 150 at the same time last year, according to the latest NYPD statistics.

"We need a holistic re-thinking of our streetscape to stop this carnage," Eric Adams said at an event on Monday.

The four-year-old victim was pronounced dead at Maimonides Hospital, while the 6-year-old remains in critical condition.

The company whose driver struck the child has been involved in a number of fatal crashes in recent year.

"We're always kind of playing catch up when there's another tragedy that happens," said Councilmember Francisco Moya.
