A 29-year-old cyclist was killed while biking through Brooklyn early Thursday morning, police said, the second confirmed cyclist death this week.
The man was biking east on Avenue N when he was struck by the driver of a 2020 Camaro SS while trying to cross Ocean Parkway shortly after midnight, according to an NYPD spokesperson. He was rushed to Maimondes Hospital with head trauma, where he was pronounced dead.
The driver remained at the scene and was not charged. The victim's name is being withheld pending family notification.
Ocean Parkway previously held the title as Brooklyn's most dangerous roadway, according to the Tri-State Transportation Campaign. The number of fatalities has decreased in recent years, after the speed limit was lowered to 25 miles per hour on the wide street, though speeding has persisted.
The Ocean Parkway crash marks the 16th cyclist fatality of 2020, and the third this month. (The cyclist death toll is slightly lower than the same time period in 2019, the deadliest year in nearly two decades for NYC cyclists.) Sarah Pitts, a senior prosecutor with the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office, was fatally struck while riding in Williamsburg on Monday. Last week, Salvador Chairez-Rodriguez was killed by a bus driver while riding in Queens.
