Just in case it hasn't been made abundantly clear, NYers like their reds and their whites almost as much as they enjoy complaining about the MTA. And according to a new report by a California wine industry company, the U.S. surpassed France to become the world's largest wine consumers last year.
Americans bought nearly 330 million cases of wine last year, coming to around $30 billion in retail sales. This would certainly be cause for national celebration, if only we hadn't blown our wad on National Drink Wine Day. There have been triumphant headlines in newspapers across the country, such as "Put a Cork in it France," from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, "US: We're #Wine" from the Post, and "We're #1" from Dr. Vino.
So go forth and celebrate this day anyway America, with your trusty Starbucks trenta cup and a bottle of Two Buck Chuck. Or perhaps take to your stoop to enjoy some Pinot Grigio with your KFC. It's not like there's anything else going on today.
