Those of us who can't really get going in the morning without a cup o' joe better be ready to pay up. Because of rising global demand (we're looking at you, India and Brazil) and poor recent harvests the price of a pound of coffee beans has been steadily rising, and shows no signs of stopping. Many smaller coffee shops in the past year have had to raise their prices by ten or twenty cents and the rest are expected to follow suit soon—even Starbucks raised the cost of their "labor intensive" drinks last year, though they haven't changed the price of a regular cuppa...yet.

"I don't know of anyone who has not had to raise their prices in the last 20 months," Donald Schoenholt, president of Brooklyn-based supplier Gillies Coffee Co., told the Journal. "The question is, how much...We don't know where the top is yet."

At least with prices going up there are still some places you can get free joe. Like the East Village's Everyman Espresso, where—for the price of The Paris Review—you can get a cup gratis.

And in other coffee related news...don't you hate it when a barista asks for your name and then writes down something completely different?
