NYC's oldest bar keeps on after a tumultuous year.

"It's not the rent anymore," the owner says as he closes up Neir's for now.

'There’s a lot of people that are hurting because of long-term speculation by landlords.'

The mayor spoke this morning on WNYC after the bar owner called into the Brian Lehrer Show.

The owner said his asking rent last year shot up to roughly $5,400/month from $3,100.

Some historians believe it's the oldest bar in the city.

It's where Mae West first performed, and it's been open for nearly 190 years.
