'We have to have an honest conversation about the value of bike helmets,' the mayor said Wednesday.

Since Citi Bike launched in 2013, the system has seen 85 million rides and just two fatalities, one of which was caused by a bus driver who swerved into the cyclist.

The mayor's office is firmly opposed to a proposed City Council bill requiring helmets for cyclists. "The Council Member doesn't understand cyclists or cyclist safety," Deputy Mayor Howard Wolfson tells us.
