More than 40 nonprofit organizations formally denounced the Mayor's plan on Monday.

Residents say the plan won't provide much housing that community members can actually afford, as 40 percent of people in the neighborhood make under $35,000 a year.

Under the new plan, more units will be set aside for families that make about $31,000 a year.

"It's fair to say that sometimes when people get to know a plan better, they see more to like about it," de Blasio said.

"Neighbors on my street are already jacking up the rents to $1,800," an East New York councilman said.
