Mayor Bill de Blasio has joined the ranks of several of his predecessors, having been booed this afternoon before throwing the first pitch at the Mets' season opener against the Washington Nationals at Citi Field. More like Boo de Blasio, amirite! (Cue [deserved] booing.) In fairness, CBS2 reports that the mayor also received some "mild cheers."

De Blasio is a known Red Sox fan, and while his honesty on such a contentious issue is admirable, it's certainly never going to make him any friends around here. Fans in attendance also used the mayor's time on the field to express their opinions on his politics.

“I’m not a fan of his — especially on his [positions on] charter schools and pre-K,” one booer, Jodi Freed, told the Post. “Is school a day care or education system? He needs to show more concern by getting rid of Common Core and educating, starting on basics.”

The mayor, who spent yesterday evening perfecting his form at the Park Slope Armory, managed to throw a strike, establishing himself as a far better athlete than he is rodent-wrangler. (May we never forget the time he dropped the groundhog.) Mayors are nearly always booed by fans during the annual ritual, Times reporter Sam Roberts told the paper of record. “I can’t remember one who actually was cheered," he said.

Here's de Blasio giving it his best shot:
