Last month, the world's fattest cat Meow died, leaving a giant hole in plus-size cat lovers' hearts. But then this weekend, two contenders stepped up to take the mantle of world's fattest cats: 30-pound Sponge Bob (currently residing at the Animal Haven Shelter in SoHo) and 40-pound Garfield (currently residing at the North Shore Animal League on Long Island). Garfield seems to have won the war—and he's been getting a lot of attention as a result. Below, watch a video in which Garfield practices his new exercise routine.

The 10-year-old tabby was brought into the North Shore Animal League after its owner died last week. North Shore veterinarian Gerard Leheney told the Guardian: "This is the fattest cat I have ever seen. My first reaction was astonishment." Garfield seems to have no underlying health issues, except for suffering from pet obesity—you can read more about it here.

On the plus side, Garfield has already lost a pound since coming to North Shore. And even better—he's been given over to a foster home this week! Hopefully they'll be able to continue helping him lose weight. As far as we know, Sponge Bob is still looking for a good home. And don't forget, it's Adopt A Shelter Cat Month.
