An unidentified 6-year-old girl was attacked by a pit bull that was running loose in the Bronx on Sunday afternoon. The harrowing incident, which was captured by a security camera, happened as the girl was walking with her grandmother along Webster Avenue. As you can see in the video below, the dog charges across the intersection straight for the girl, and her grandmother is helpless to stop it. "You can see the dog is walking around with the girl in her mouth," says the owner of a nearby tire shop.
Fortunately several good Samaritans rushed to the girl's aid and were able to tear the dog off. One worker at the tire shop, Eduardo Candelier, even brought a hammer, but they were able to save the girl without bringing it down. "The dog was biting her," Candelier tells NBC New York. "The girl was crying, she was going crazy." She was taken to the hospital, where she was treated for small puncture wounds to her right arm and right leg. The nightmares, of course, will last a lifetime.
As for the pit bull, NBC New York reports that the owner, who lives nearby, was issued a summons for letting the dog off-leash. The dog will not be taken away or put down.
