We give them special little lanes for their bikes, we commission David Byrne to design artsy racks where they can lock them up, we even let them borrow bikes for free when they come to Governors Island for their precious MIA concerts. But it's never enough! Now some needy cycling advocates say they should be able to load their bikes onto the fronts of buses, like they do in other cities like Chicago, Las Vegas, and Kansas City. What's next, raising the height of bridges so cyclists can ride under with their tall bikes without bumping their delicate heads?
The Case for Bike Racks on NYC Buses from Streetfilms on Vimeo.
As Streetsfilm notes, NYC is the only major city in America where none of the buses have bike racks. And they want NYC to be just like Kansas City, where cyclists can conveniently ride a bus to wherever they get tired of pedaling. But if we wanted convenience, we'd live in Toronto and travel everywhere via their amazing monorail system!
Of course, the bus/bike advocates say we can ease into a more bike-friendly bus system, starting with "pilot programs" in specific areas of NYC, like "anywhere in Staten Island; Eastern Queens; parts of The Bronx; and anywhere buses cross bridges without cycle paths including the Verrazano-Narrows, The Whitestone and The Throggs Neck bridges." But if we let this happen, the next thing you know cycling will be so appealing in NYC that everyone will want to do it, and when the time is ripe, the DOT will seize all cars owned by the last remaining persecuted motorists and force them into "bicycle reeducation camps" somewhere out in the far reaches of Bushwick. They're coming for you, Steve Cuozzo. They're coming for all of us.
