A 16-year-old student at a high school in Paterson, NJ was arrested last week after a brutal video surfaced showing him assaulting a teacher in a classroom.

The assault took place at around 10:20 a.m. on January 20th at John F. Kennedy High School. According to NJ.com, the unidentified student, who is a freshman at the school, was disruptive in class, allegedly sitting in his teacher's seat and refusing to move. He reportedly attacked his 62-year-old teacher after he attempted to write him up and confiscate his cell phone.

Video shows the student grabbing his teacher from behind and slamming him into a desk, before ultimately throwing him to the floor. Other students in the class can be heard calling for security:

"This was a very upsetting incident and certainly one that we took seriously as the safety of our students and staff is our top priority," Terri Corallo, a spokesperson for the school district, told us in a statement. "This student was immediately suspended and placed on home instruction. The student’s parents were called and there is currently a criminal complaint filed against this student."

“It’s clear that this man was body slammed with the kid on top of him and it’s clear that his head hit a desk as he was going down," Paterson Education Association President Peter Tirri told NJ.com. "The man is 62 years old and he’s thrown on the floor like that. It’s outrageous.”

The student, who was charged with third-degree aggravated assault, will also be subject to a disciplinary hearing "to determine an appropriate educational placement for the remaining school year," according to Corallo.
