Because sometimes it's just too much of a hassle to open the silly things first, why not just take the whole safe and run? That's what a robber in Elmhurst did recently, wheeling the mini-fridge-sized safe he nicked from a residential building out on an office chair. And he has different disguises, to boot!

The man initially appears limping with a cane, hair au naturel, into the elevator of a building at 78-36 46th Avenue. Some two and a half hours later, he re-emerges, cane dragging alongside his leg, with a snazzy bandana atop his head and a large, cloth-draped square on an office-style chair. He wheels the loot, which police say held cash and jewelry, out through the front lobby, attracting only the attention of a passing toddler.

Police say the man appears to be about 5 foot 10, 220 pounds and in his 40s. If you think you’ve seen him or the safe, contact the Police Department’s Crime Stoppers unit by phone (1-800-577-8477) or online.
