Yesterday, police arrested two men in the death of chef Hwangbum Yang, the 26-year-old Bronx man who was fatally shot by a robber who was after his iPhone. A new horrifying detail has emerged: police were able to catch the suspects because they tried to sell the stolen phone on Craigslist—for $400.
“Have two iPhone 4’s for sale Inwood/Wash Hits,” read the ad placed on the site by suspects Dominick Davis and Alejandro Campos. A call to the number listed on the ad produced Campos’ cell phone number, according to cops. Both men have been charged with murder, robbery, gun possession and possession of stolen property. According to the Post, Davis and Campos have made incriminating statements—cops believe that Campos was the getaway driver and Davis the shooter.
Yang, who was walking home from his Museum of Modern Art restaurant job, had been held at gunpoint at the corner of Cambridge Avenue and West 232 Street in Riverdale around 12:30 a.m. on April 19. He was shot once at close range. A witness had said he saw a suspect going through his pockets: “He stopped and sort of squished something with his foot, and then I realized it was a person because he lifted [Yang’s] arms up a little. He did it so casually—that’s what is so scary.”
The News contacted that witness about the arrests: “I’m on the verge of happy tears and have goose bumps from head to toe,” the witness who called 911 that night said. “I heard the gunshot, heard footsteps running, looked out my window and saw how he was kicked to see if was alive. I was in total shock.”
In the video below, the victim's sister Sunah Yang said the family was " very relieved" the men were arrested: "They're heartless," she said of the suspects. "If it wasn't my brother it could have been another. I'm glad they were caught so that this wouldn't happen again."
