Yesterday morning, flyfishing guide Brendan McCarthy was out on the water near the Rockaways when he spotted a humpback whale playing in the water. "I am a flyfishing charter boat captain and have spent a lot of time out here for the past 20 years," he told us. "Never see them this close here." Robert DiGiovanni of The Riverhead Foundation told us that whales are sometimes spotted offshore during this time of year in that area of Queens—and we have gotten some reports of them over the last couple years, but rarely have we seen as gorgeous a photo as the one above.
