Dominique Strauss-Kahn won't have to show up in court until August 23, as the hearing scheduled for August 3 has been postponed by the DA's office. That August 3rd hearing was postponed from July 18 as both legal teams continued to investigate the sexual assault allegations leveled against the former IMF head by Nafissatou Diallo. "We understand the district attorney is continuing to investigate," Strauss-Kahn's lawyers said in a statement, "We are confident that when the investigation is completed Mr. Vance will move to dismiss all charges." City Room reports that Manhattan DA Cyrus Vance Jr. would soon issue a statement explaining the delay.
According to the Daily News, Diallo is scheduled to meet with the prosecution team on Wednesday to review the tape of a phone conversation Diallo had a little more than a day after the alleged sexual assault. Originally, prosecutors believed the initial translation of Diallo's call—:in her native dialect of Fulani—to an Arizona convict, in which she stated that "this guy has a lot of money. I know what I'm doing." Now there are reports that the call was "mistranslated," which is why Diallo is being "reinterviewed" with Cy Vance's office tomorrow.
The Post (who else?) has "sources" that inform them the case is still faltering on Diallo's inconsistencies: that her initial claims that Strauss-Kahn said nothing to her and that she cleaned another room after the alleged attach, are contradicted by her interview with ABC. "There's so many inconsistencies now it's incredible. It's like multiple choice—pick a version."
Columnist Michael Daly of the Daily News writes that Diallo's "desperation for a better life" explains why she did not fight back against Strauss-Kahn for fear of losing her job, and that yearning for a better life for her and her daughter caused her to "passionately" lie about being gang-raped in Guinea. "Ultimately, Vance will have to decide whether he believes Diallo was assaulted. If he does, he should prosecute, win or lose."
