Finally, real snowstorm! The 17 inches of snow in Central Park so far has this storm knocking on the list of ten greatest snowfalls recorded in the park since 1869. As commenter MT wondered earlier, this storm gives the city its first ever snow triple-double -three snowstorms with at least ten inches of snow in a season. Another 5-10 inches of snow could fall by tomorrow morning. Final fun fact: Only ten more inches is needed to for this storm to be NYC's snowiest ever.

Snowicane is trapped. The low pressure system on the ground is directly under the center of low pressure all the way up to the jet stream. Stacking like that means the surface storm isn't being pushed along. Having no motivation the slacker storm has been meandering. By sticking around it was able to suck enough cold air southward to produce this second wave of snow.

The storm looks like it will be around all weekend. The bulk of any additional snow will fall today and tonight. Temperatures will hold steady near the freezing mark. There will be the occasional flurry or snow shower from tomorrow afternoon through Sunday as the storm gradually fades away. Highs both days will be in the mid 30s.
