It's time to dig that umbrella out from the depths of your closet after a relatively dry September so far.

Rain is set to sweep the New York City area this week, starting Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Showers and thunderstorms are possible Tuesday night into early Wednesday as a cold front moves through the region. That will be followed by more chances of wet weather for much of Thursday and into the weekend.

“We have been drier than normal. This month for Central Park, we’re just about an inch [of rain] below normal,” the NWS’ James Tomasini said. “Coming up this week and through the weekend, we’ll have plenty of chances to get some more rain.”

While the city has been slightly drier than normal in recent weeks, most of the rest of New York is under a drought watch, according to the state environmental department. Officials have urged affected communities to reduce their water use after a dry summer.

High temperatures are expected to linger around the mid-70s to low-80s this week, NWS said. There’s an approximately 40%-50% chance of a warmer-than-average fall in the area, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
