A man accused of beating another man to death at a Brooklyn subway stop is in custody, NYPD officials said, after police tracked him down Tuesday night within hours of the grisly attack.

Officers arrived at the Jay Street–MetroTech stop in Downtown Brooklyn at around 3 p.m. after getting a call that someone had attacked another man at the station, according to officials. They found the victim unresponsive, badly beaten and bleeding heavily on a platform, police said.

Emergency medical workers took him to Methodist Hospital, where he later died. Officials have not yet released his identity as they work to notify his family.

Police said the suspect fled the station after the beating and got on a Bronx-bound 2 train at nearby Hoyt Street. Officers later apprehended him near Times Square, according to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, who said the entire force received an emergency alert to their phones with a photo and description of the man. His charges were still pending Wednesday morning.

Tuesday’s incident marks the fourth homicide in the city’s subways this year, according to NYPD reports. Official data shows this summer was the transit system’s safest summer in recent history, outside of the COVID-19 pandemic, and about 4 million people ride the subways and buses daily.

Still, ten people were killed in homicides in subways citywide last year, a quarter-century high, according to police data.

This is a developing story based on preliminary information from police and has been updated with additional details.

Correction: This story has been updated to reflect that the incident was the fourth homicide in the city's subways so far this year.
