Police said on Thursday that they are still looking for the driver of a moped who sped off after his passenger fired a gun and killed a 7-month-old girl in Brooklyn on Wednesday.
Kaori Patterson-Moore was in a stroller at the intersection of Humboldt and Moore streets in East Williamsburg when she was struck by the gunfire around 1:20 p.m. Wednesday, according to the NYPD. Officials said she was not the intended target and was pronounced dead at nearby Woodhull Hospital, where her father rushed her after she was shot.
Police said the two people on the moped fled the scene, but were thrown to the ground when they crashed into an oncoming car a couple of blocks away, a few minutes later. An ambulance responding to a 911 call about the collision transported the passenger to another hospital, and police took him into custody for an unrelated crime, according to authorities.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch on Thursday identified the alleged shooter as 21-year-old Amuri Greene and said he would be charged with murder and two counts of attempted murder for Patterson-Moore’s death. His attorney information was not immediately available.
Neighbors and friends of the baby’s family were reeling Thursday, as dozens of memorial candles flickered in her honor outside of her father’s apartment building at the Bushwick Houses, a public housing development just a short walk from where she was killed.
“I’ve been thinking about it all night, all day,” said Mia Torres, 19, a friend of Patterson-Moore’s parents. She described looking out her window Wednesday afternoon and running to the scene after seeing the baby’s mother frantically screaming.
“She was saying, ‘My daughter, my daughter, my daughter got shot,’” Torres said. “I feel like if you see kids around, like why even still shoot? Why not just put your gun away, knowing that there’s kids around, knowing you could take kids’ lives?"
“You just took away a kid’s life that didn’t even turn 1 yet, couldn’t even speak, didn’t even get a chance to walk,” she added.

NYPD detectives and officers were still combing through the crime scene Thursday morning. Officials said the missing suspect was wearing light gray pants, a white T-shirt and a black surgical mask around the time of the incident. They said he was last seen fleeing toward the Marcy Houses in Bed-Stuy, another public housing development, and police were conducting a “massive" manhunt to find him.
NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said Thursday that police were looking into whether the shooting was connected to a feud between a gang from the Marcy Houses and a rival gang from the Bushwick Houses.
The Rev. Kevin McCall, a civil rights activist, said during a press conference near the crime scene on Thursday that his organization, the Crisis Action Center, is offering a $5,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest in the case. The NYPD is also asking the public to come forward with information.
“I usually have enough words to say. But I have children,” McCall said. “A parent, any parent, don’t want to go through the trauma of burying a 7-month-old.”

Torres said she’s worried about Patterson-Moore’s parents, who have a toddler. She said they never went anywhere without their kids.
“I don’t want my friends to lose themselves,” she said, “I don’t want to sit here and see my friends depressed, having to grieve their daughter.”
