After 10 days on the run, a burglary suspect who escaped from police custody after slipping out of a hospital room while wearing a shackle has been arrested again, after police spotted him in Penn Station this morning.
The NYPD said that Daniel Ortiz was arrested without incident this morning shortly after 7 a.m. today after being recognized in Penn Station by law enforcement.
Ortiz was originally arrested for allegedly stealing from the Herald Square Macy'sescaped from police on the afternoon of December 29th, and was brought to Lenox Hill Healthplex Hospital for to be treated for an injury. According to the Daily News, Ortiz was brought to the hospital to for stab wounds to his chest that he received three days before his arrest. While at the hospital, Ortiz slipped away from police while still wearing one leg shackle and disappeared into the city.
A police source said that this morning Amtrak police recognized Ortiz from a wanted poster, and that when they questioned him, he admitted to being the man police were looking for. According to the source, Ortiz told police that he had been riding the subway since escaping from custody, and that he couldn't remember the details of his escape. Ortiz was arrested without incident and has been charged with escape.
