Police on Monday were looking for a person they said abandoned a baby girl in front of a Bronx residence early on Sunday.

Someone left the girl wrapped in blankets in a tote bag on Rev. James A. Polite Avenue near East 167th Street just after 6 a.m. on Sunday, according to the NYPD.

Emergency medical service workers took the baby to Jacobi Hospital, where she remains in stable condition, police said.

Authorities did not specify exactly how old the infant was. PIX 11 reported that a resident who lives nearby brought the baby inside for her safety.

A surveillance video released by the NYPD shows a person in a hooded jacket and white pants carrying a green bag and wearing a black face mask while walking on a sidewalk.

Under New York law, there are certain circumstances where a person can legally, anonymously leave a newborn baby who is up to 30 days old, according to the state Office of Children and Family Services. The baby must be left in a safe manner with an “appropriate person,” or in a “suitable location” — like a hospital or staffed police or fire station — if such a person is notified immediately of the baby’s location.

The state offers more information on the law through a hotline at 866-505-SAFE. New York City has lists of appropriate locations via its 311 portal.

Police did not release further details about a suspect but are asking anyone with information to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS (8477), or 888-57-PISTA (74782) for Spanish. Tips are confidential and can also be submitted online.

The state’s Parent Connection Helpline at 800-345-KIDS or the city’s Administration for Children’s Services can also help make arrangements for adoptions or otherwise legally transferring custody of a child.

This is a developing story based on preliminary information from the NYPD and may be updated.
