An NYPD officer is suing a PC Richard & Son outlet in New Jersey after they allegedly detained, frisked and harassed him for "shopping while black."
According to the Post, 40-year-old Officer Sammari Malcolm, who works out of the 120th Precinct in Staten Island, is suing the PC Richard & Son in Lawrenceville for $5.75 million for the incident last fall.
Malcolm alleges in the suit that he was detained by staff for over two hours while trying to purchase a $3,000 TV and over $1,000 worth of other electronics on Sept. 30th. He said that he used his credit card to pay for the purchases, and even though the transaction was accepted, employees accused him of using a stolen credit card and a fake driver’s license.
Store employees called cops to report a "suspicious male black" according to the suit:
"When plaintiff asked, 'Did you profile me?' [manager] Benedetto Aiello responded, 'Yes, because we get hit a lot with people from New York.'"
Back in 2013, Barneys and Macy's both came under fire after several reports from customers who said they had been accused of thievery for shopping while black or Latino.
