An off-duty police sergeant was attacked today while heading work in Manhattan.

The incident occurred at 125th Street and Lenox Avenue, at around 6:50 a.m. WCBS 2 reports, "The officer had just gotten off the subway and was headed to a nearby Dunkin’ Donuts, police said. An emotionally disturbed man punched and kicked the officer, causing an eye laceration and bruises to her head."

WABC 7 describes the officer as a sergeant who was going to her position at "the NYPD Housing Bureau's PSA 5, located at 221 East 123rd Street in Harlem," adding that the attacker punched her again after she had been knocked to the ground. Sergeants don't wear uniforms to work, so she was in plain clothes. It is not known whether her shield was visible.

It's unclear why she was attacked. According to police, the suspect is approximately 6-feet-tall, 200 pounds and was last seen wearing blue jeans, a blue jacket and a baseball cap with orange, blue and white trim.
