A member of the NYPD’s security detail for Gracie Mansion was suspended without pay after department officials said he shot and critically injured a man in the Bronx on Monday night while the officer was off duty.
According to police, the incident unfolded around 9:15 p.m. near the corner of West 231st Street and Albany Crescent in Kingsbridge.
Authorities said the officer, 44-year-old Jonathan Baez, confronted several men over a previously reported stolen vehicle. Officials said they could not provide further details about whose vehicle was involved.
Baez fired his weapon and struck a 30-year-old man in the head, police said. The man was transported by private means to a local hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
Baez could not immediately be reached for comment on Wednesday. City records show he joined the force in 2014 and has been part of the NYPD’s Uniformed Operations Unit since last year.
NYPD officials did not identify the injured man as the investigation continued. The unions that represent police officers and detectives did not respond to inquiries right away.
A spokesperson for Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s office referred to the police department for comment. Gracie Mansion on the Upper East Side is the mayor's official residence.
