An NYPD officer shot and killed a man inside of a Bronx home on Thursday after police say he repeatedly told officers he had a gun and refused their orders to drop it.
The shooting happened after a number of officers went to an apartment on Willis Avenue near Bruckner Boulevard in Mott Haven to arrest Lucien Colon, 44, who had open warrants, including one for failing to report as a New York state sex offender, Deputy Chief John Wilson said at a press conference Thursday.
When the officers got to the home at about 6:45 a.m., a woman let them in and they found Colon sitting on a bed in a bedroom with what appeared to be a gun in his hand, Wilson said.
The officers told Colon multiple times to drop the gun and show his hands, but he replied, “It’s not going to happen,” Wilson said.
After more than a minute of the officers ordering Colon to drop the weapon and come out of the room, one officer shot Colon once in the head, Wilson added. The deputy chief said the NYPD is investigating if the gun was an actual firearm or if it was a BB gun that resembled a real gun.
Colon was taken to Lincoln Hospital and pronounced dead after the shooting, Wilson said.
The shooting was captured on body cameras worn by the officers and is being investigated by the NYPD’s force investigation division, Wilson said.
