Yesterday, Nick Brooks was charged with second-degree murder for allegedly strangling his girlfriend at the Soho House. Brooks, who previously pleaded not guilty to attempted murder but faced the second-degree murder charge once it was determined that Sylvie Cachay's death was a homicide, has now pleaded not guilty to the murder charge—and records show that he expressed his fears about jail while cops questioned him. The 24-year-old said, "I'm Jewish and I'm worried about getting beat up by white supremacists. I watch the show 'Oz.' I've seen what happens in jail."
The Daily News also reports that Brooks allegedly asked cops, "How long can I get for something like this? Will I get bail? Should I pay someone for protection while I'm in?" Then he explained his money was tied up in a trust fund. Prosecutors say that "evidence in this case makes clear that when Nicholas Brooks left Soho House for the last time on Dec. 9, Sylvie Cachay was already dead at the bottom of an overflowing bathtub," while Brooks' attorney said, "I believe, from what I know, he was not present in the premises when the young lady died," but did not ask for bail.
Cachay's brother Patrick was in court and told reporters afterwards, "Truly it was disgusting to see this cowardly individual. It was definitely important to see that he was in custody. This was just a horrible act of unnecessary violence against my sister."
