This July the MTA is planning on cutting service on 12 bus lines in four boroughs, but it isn't all bad news. In one of those rare moments, the Authority is also planning on adding service to an additional 5 lines. And most of the cuts are coming on the weekend.
The MTA says the reason for the service changes are not so much financial (the whole thing is estimated to be "cost neutral" in the end) but practical. The riders simply aren't there and, the MTA says, these changes should "more closely align service with customer demand."
According to MTA papers [PDF, page 51] most of the changes in service are coming on the weekends. The weekday exceptions being service on the B13 (which will have more buses in the afternoons and evenings), the Bx6 (more buses all day), and the B63 (fewer buses in the afternoons).
Then on Saturdays the B62, Bx13, Q13 buses are looking to start arriving with a little more frequency over the course of the day while the B16, B41, B42, B47, B63, M11, and Q3 will arrive with less frequency.
On Sunday, the B20, B26, B41, B54, B63, and M23 will take a little longer to arrive, while the Q13 will take less time. The changes, which have been approved, should kick in starting in July.
