The mother of Kimani Gray, the 16-year-old who was shot and killed by NYPD officers in East Flatbush last week, is demanding a full investigation into her son's shooting after meeting with the Brooklyn D.A.'s office yesterday.
Carol Gray says she's unhappy with how the city has handled Kimani Gray's death, and believes the officers responsible for the shooting should be investigated further. "We’re not pleased with the way they’re handling their investigation and we want an independent investigation just so the truth comes out," she said yesterday. Gray and City Councilman Charles Barron had a meeting at the Brooklyn D.A.'s office, but were not satisfied with what the prosecutors had to say. "They haven't done anything," Gray said afterward.
Officer Jovaniel Cordova and Sgt. Mourad Mourad, who shot Kimani Gray seven times on the night of March 9th, say the 16-year-old threatened them with a gun before they took fire. But both Cordova and Mourad have been targets of several civil rights violation lawsuits in the past, and Barron wondered why they were still on the force, and questioned their story. "Nobody believes the police version," he said. "Nobody corroborates it, nobody says the same thing that the police says." And Gray addressed the protests and rioting that have broken out in East Flatbush in the wake of the shooting. "There will be peace when we have justice," she said.
A wake for Kimani Gray will be held tomorrow; he will be buried Saturday at the St. Catherine of Genoa Roman Catholic Church in Brooklyn.
