We knew it was coming, and this morning Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz held a mock funeral for the M train. Joining him were Daniel Squadron (New York State Senator), Michael Burke (Downtown Brooklyn Partnership), a bagpiper, and Paul Nelson (Assemblywoman Joan Millman's Chief of Staff).
Markowitz stated: “As Brooklyn’s own Woody Allen once said, ‘I don’t want to achieve immortality through my work, I want to achieve it through not dying.' We know the M and the R trains feel the same way. They want to live long and productive lives, and let’s face it, Brooklyn needs them! Our growing population of Downtown Brooklyn residents needs night-time service on the R; and for the M to be denied any entry into Brooklyn — that’s a fate worse than death! Long live the M and R!” Everything else you missed can be found after the jump in what is surely the first funeral up on YouTube. But where was the R's flower wreath?
