The Bronx man who allegedly shot his wife on Christmas morning because she was seeking a divorce was tracked down to Maryland yesterday.
Suspect Rafael Herrera, 37, is accused of shooting his wife of 11 years, 27-year-old Yadira Perea Saavedra, sometime before 10 a.m. on Friday morning inside their home on E. 220th Street in Williamsbridge. Saavedra was struck by a single bullet, which went through her arm and into her neck. The couple's two children, ages 10 and 8, were in the house at the time.
Sources told the Post that Herrera was found on Saturday in Prince George’s County, where he has family. He will be extradited back to NY, and charges are pending.
Saavedra, who reportedly asked for a divorce from her husband recently, was taken to Jacobi Medical Center, where she has undergone surgery to remove the bullet in her neck.
"I feel better now," the victim’s brother, Sergio Parea Saavedra, told the News after learning Herrera had been taken into custody. "He’s just stupid."
He added that the children had been taken into protective custody in case Herrera came back for them, and their daughter "all [Friday] she was crying, but today she’s just quiet. We say, 'Are you OK?' And she says she’s OK, but her face is sad."
