Police were looking Thursday for a man who slashed another man in his face at East Harlem’s 125th Street subway station, sending him to the hospital, NYPD officials said.

The slashing happened around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday on the stairs leading from the street to the 4/5/6 train platform, according to officials. Police said the two men were arguing and one pulled out a knife, slashing the 28-year-old victim once in his chin.

First responders took the victim to Harlem Hospital in stable condition, while the suspect, who was wearing a brown sweatsuit, fled in an unknown direction, officials said. Police said the men were acquaintances, but were still investigating what their dispute was about.

The station is one of New York City’s busiest transit hubs and experienced the highest amount of violent crime out of all of the city’s subway stations in 2023, according to a study by the civic nonprofit Vital City. The report found most of the incidents occurred in the afternoon or evening.
