An NYPD officer shot and killed a man armed with a weapon inside NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital Thursday evening, according to police officials.

Authorities said officers responded to multiple 911 calls around 5:27 p.m., reporting a violent man armed with a knife inside the hospital.

Law enforcement officials said hospital staff told police the man had barricaded himself inside a room on the eighth floor.

The man had cut himself with the sharp object and was attempting to harm two others in the room, including an elderly patient and a member of the hospital’s security staff, NYPD Assistant Chief Charles Minch said at a press conference Thursday evening.

“When they got to the room, they saw blood all over the walls, floor and splattered across the exterior of the door,” Minch said. “The subject came into the doorframe and displayed the bloody weapon.”

Minch said officers spent several minutes issuing verbal commands and repeatedly deployed a taser, which was ineffective, before officers discharged their weapons after the man advanced toward them.

The man was pronounced dead a short time later, authorities said. His name was not immediately released.

Police officials said they did not specify how many times officers fired or where the man was struck. Minch said police were still investigating exactly what kind of weapon the man was holding.

Authorities said the incident was captured on body-worn camera footage and the weapon was recovered at the scene.

Video on the Citizen app showed a large police presence outside the hospital.

This story has been updated to clarify police are still investigating what kind of weapon the man was allegedly holding.
