Tributes to those who were martyred ten years ago filled the sports world Sunday, but amazingly Major League Baseball repeated a mistake from that era. In 2001 the Mets wanted to wear FDNY and NYPD hats to honor the victims of 9/11 but MLB denied them permission. Those Mets wore the hats in defiance of MLB rules. Sunday, the 2011 Mets tried to make the same tribute with the same result. Most shockingly, it was the Vice-President of MLB, Joe Torre, the Yankee Manager ten years ago, who made the decision.

The Mets honored Torre's idiotic edict, but fell to Chicago 10-6 in 11 innings. The Mets overcame a 4-1 deficit, but they blew numerous chances to win the game, including having a runner thrown out at home in the bottom of the ninth. Josh Stinson walked two and gave up two hits in the 11th as the Cubs broke through to win the game.

The Yankees won a game they really needed. On a four-game losing streak, New York snapped it with a 6-5 win in Anaheim. Mark Teixeira had the big hit, a generously scored triple that went off the glove of the Angels centerfielder. That drove in the tying and winning runs and the bullpen made it stand up. The Yankees' pen pitched four scoreless innings with Corey Wade winning his fifth game and Mariano saving his 40th. The win and a Boston loss put the Yankees 3-1/2 up in the division.

At the US Open, Serena Williams was denied another Grand Slam Title by Sam Stosur who beat her in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. Williams had another altercation with the Chair Umpire after being assessed a penalty point for screaming while her opponent was trying to return the ball.

The Giants will face a long week of questions after an uninspired 28-14 loss in Washington. Forget "elite", Eli didn't play like an average QB. The defense was inconsistent recording some big plays, but also making Rex Grossman look like an All-Pro.

The Jets beat Dallas with a comeback win 27-24. Things looked bleak when Dallas scored at the start of the 4th quarter to make it 24-10, but New York reeled off 17-straight points for the win. Nick Folk nailed a 50-yard field goal with 27 seconds left to win the game.
