Maybe the Mayans were right about 2012: Isiah Thomas was fired by Florida International University as coach of their men's basketball team today. Thomas lasted only three terrible years with the school, finishing with a 26-65 overall record (they never won more than 11 games with him in a season). You may now assume the fetal position and commence the Isiah Thomas Is Coming Back To The Knicks And There's Nothing We Can Do About It speculation.
We've of course been down this terrifying road several times since Thomas was finally kicked to the curb of MSG in 2008. First, he was reportedly sent by best friend forever Jim Dolan to finalize that sure-thing LeBron James deal; then it came out that Thomas had been acting as an unofficial consultant to Dolan since he left (which means it was like he never even had left!). In addition to talking to Dolan at least once a week about Knicks business, former GM Donnie Walsh described Thomas as a fly buzzing around his head during his Knicks tenure.
And now, with Mike D'Antoni gone and a lot of question marks hanging over the superstar-saturated Garden heading into next season, it's entirely possible Dolan could finally bring Thomas back to the family officially, as he's wanted to for the past four years. As one insider put it, Dolan "does not care about the fan outrage that will occur if he eventually brings him back in some capacity."
But hey, what's the worst that could happen? It's not like anybody called his first run as coach and team president of the Knicks "the worst team in sports history."
