Last night, Caroline Kennedy made her first public appearance since stepping out of the Senate seat hunt last month. She was attending the opening of designer Giorgio Armani's new Emporio Armani flagship store. The evening was also a celebration of Armani's $1 million donation to the Fund for Public Schools (Kennedy is the co-chair).
The Daily News reported that Kennedy declined to answer any questions about her attempt to go into politics, saying only, "Tonight is really about this." Women's Wear Daily was inside the event and said that Kennedy praised Armani for opening the "giant store" during this less-than-ideal time—and she cracked a joke about not being someone who should talk about ideal timing.
Armani had more to say—he wrote on the NY Times' The Moment blog about visiting a school in the Bronx with Kennedy. They rode the subway!
At 9 a.m., I headed up to 166th Street with Caroline Kennedy. It was the first time I’ve ever met her, and I found her to be very refined, with impeccable manners. Luckily she speaks French, which is my second language...
Caroline and I decided to hop on the subway on our way back down to the city center, which turned out to be a much faster way of getting back. It was really crowded when we got on at 161st Street, but later I sat down next to a nice lady in a North Face puffer jacket and ski hat. She told me she assisted elderly people, and I asked to see her card. I told her, “Who knows when I might need your help?” Just kidding, of course. When I got up, I left her my own scarf as a parting gift.
Armani also discussed President Obama with WWD, "He moves like a young person."
