Mayor Bloomberg (aka "Mike Bloomberg" on Twitter) spent weekend all over the city, as he opened campaign offices for his third term bid. He told the crowd in the Bronx, "Do you remember life without 311? Neither do I. Do you remember when you had to breathe someone else's cigarette smoke? I remember that.... We've got an awful lot of work to do, but if we put New York ahead from partisan politics, if we go out and to explain to everybody, there may not be any easy, painless way, but there is a right way. The right way of hard work, and being accountable and being inclusive, of knowing that we can do it if we can just pull together." So that wooing of the Republican Party...
Politicker NY noticed how Bloomberg was "joined by at least one elected official and one local supporter who worked on his 2005 re-election campaign" while CityRoom remarked upon his apparent campaign theme—"that under his watch, New York City had roared back after 9/11 and would thrive over the next four years, in spite of a deep, worldwide recession." There were also protesters—drawing attention to cuts to AIDS program funding—outside the Manhattan campaign office (no one was arrested).
Bloomberg showed off his knowledge of Queens by saying that borough's office was selected because it was down the street from Eddie's Sweet Shop but he kept calling Staten Island's Hylan Boulevard "Hylan Avenue." And Ed Koch, present for the Manhattan office opening, said NYers have an essentially S&M relationship with the mayor, "I believe in reality. And I know people like to kick a billionaire around. They love it, even when they love him and know they’re going to vote for him. They like to kick, to show they’re the boss. And there’s nothing wrong with that 'cause we know that they want him."
