It's an ugly day out there and it looks like it's just going to get uglier before this storm moves away. There is a layer of warm air overhead that is just deep enough to melt the snow as it falls. Where the surface temperature is below 32 degrees that rain is turning into freezing rain. The mix is expected to last until colder air arrives sometime after lunch, and once the cold air gets here the mix turns to freezing rain and snow in the city before finally switching over to all snow by late afternoon. Most of the city could see something like a quarter-inch of ice and another inch of snow before the precipitation ends this evening.
Tonight and tomorrow we have to contend with another one of these quick hit cold air outbreaks. The temperature is going to drop to the mid teens overnight and the wind chill is expected to be near zero thanks to a strong northwesterly breeze. The quick freeze will turn all those slush puddles into ice so watch your step tonight. Tuesday should be sunny but it is only going to warm to the mid 20s.
The temperature will rebound to near 40 on Wednesday. An arctic front Wednesday night will remind us that perhaps groundhogs aren't the best weather forecasters. Look for a few flurries on Thursday followed by a frigid Friday and a good week or so of cooler than normal weather following that.
