New York City voters will have one more opportunity to watch mayoral candidates Eric Adams and Curtis Sliwa go head-to-head in a one-hour debate on Tuesday night. In their first official showdown last week, Adams, the Democratic nominee, largely fended off or ignored attacks from his Republican opponent Sliwa.
Following the debate, Adams accused Sliwa of creating a "circus" around the race, while the latter criticized Adams for rubbing elbows with billionaires and wealthy celebrities at fancy clubs.
Both men are longtime public figures who have campaigned on policing and public safety; Adams is the current Brooklyn borough president and a former New York City police officer, while Sliwa is the red-beret-wearing founder of the Guardian Angels, the group that began patrolling the city after forming in 1979.
But with Democrats outnumbering Republicans seven-to-one, and with a past riddled with fabrication and hoaxes, Sliwa has struggled to draw attention as a serious contender. According to a recent poll (sponsored by Emerson College, WPIX11, and NewsNation), Adams maintains a 40-point lead over Sliwa.
Early voting began this past Saturday and will continue through Sunday, October 31st. Election Day is on Tuesday, November 2nd.
