When Luigi Mangione was arrested in an Altoona, Pennsylvania McDonald’s last year, he had a hand-drawn map in his backpack with a line connecting Pittsburgh, Columbus and Cincinnati, according to court documents presented in his murder case this week.
“Keep momentum,” a note next to the map said. “FBI slower overnight.”
Police arrested Mangione after receiving a tip from a McDonald’s employee. Prosecutors say he shot United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson at point-blank range outside the Midtown Hilton last December before fleeing the area. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to state and federal murder charges.
Mangione’s defense team is now trying to suppress evidence gathered during that arrest, arguing police didn’t have a proper search warrant for the backpack or read Mangione his Miranda rights before interrogating him. After the hearings, Manhattan judge Gregory Carro will decide what is and is not admissible before trial.
Prosecutors with the Manhattan District Attorney’s office last week entered into evidence a bus ticket from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh the same day as the shooting. While they say it was recovered from Mangione, the Greyhound ticket lists the name “Sam Dawson.”
Mangione appeared to have a practice of making maps of his surroundings. Recovered with the bus ticket was a hand-drawn map of the Altoona area and a to-do list, according to court records.
Checked off the list was a trip to Best Buy to purchase a USB drive and a digital camera. Upcoming items included “intel check-in” and “survival kit.”
Body camera footage shows Mangione told police he was homeless when officers first approached him.
