A 75-year-old woman suffering from Alzheimer’s was sexually assaulted in the stairwell outside a Fort Greene housing complex this week.

CBS 2 reports that the unidentified woman was collecting cans and bottles at around 8 a.m. on New Year's Day when a man dragged her to the bottom of an outdoor stairwell on North Orchard Walk. There, he attacked her and stole her wallet, leaving her with a fractured eye socket and hospitalizing her.

When contacted, the NYPD had no information on the incident, but CBS 2 says the department's Special Victims Unit is investigating. "He’s an animal. That was an animal," one area resident told the station. "I don’t understand why he did it."

The victim, who has three young grandchildren, is reportedly exhibiting early signs of Alzheimer's.
