Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani remained hospitalized in critical but stable condition with pneumonia on Monday, his spokesperson Ted Goodman said.
Goodman said Giuliani had required mechanical ventilation to get enough oxygen while fighting the virus, but was breathing on his own by Monday morning. Goodman first shared on Sunday that Giuliani had been hospitalized, though at the time the spokesperson didn’t say for how long and for what ailment.
According to Goodman, Giuliani had previously been diagnosed with restrictive airway disease as a result of being in Lower Manhattan during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The condition complicates any respiratory disease like pneumonia, Goodman added.
“Mayor Giuliani is the ultimate fighter — as he has demonstrated throughout his life — and he is winning this battle,” the spokesperson said in a social media post Monday. “His family deeply appreciates the outpouring of love and support. The mayor believes in the power of prayer, and we are feeling that strength today.”
Giuliani served two terms as mayor and rose to national prominence in the wake of the attacks on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.
On Friday, he hosted his nightly show, “America’s Mayor Live,” from Palm Beach, Florida. At the start of the broadcast, he coughed and said his voice was “under the weather,” adding he would not be able to speak as loudly as usual.
