Over the weekend, 28-year-old Orlando Santos (who was wanted on a drug warrant) was fatally shot by police after a car chase on the Major Deegan Expressway. So his family and friends decided to pay their respects by piling into 20 cars and retracing the chase route at a snail's pace, honking their horns and flashing lights.
Friend Onix Diaz was in the passengers seat when Santos tried to run over officers, causing police to open fire and shoot Santos five times in the head. Police had originally tried to pull over Santos for a broken headlight, and believe he sped away because he was wanted on a warrant for skipping court in a drug bust. However, Diaz said, "I ain’t saying nothing." Friends and family defended Santos; his sister said, "He was not a thug, he had no weapon on him, he had nowhere to go. They shot him 19 times. He left four children behind, who is going to look after his kids?" Family and friends gathered outside is Bronx apartment for a candlelight vigil last night, and relatives had reportedly hired a lawyer.
