On Tuesday, the NY Post ran an article about NJ Governor Chris Christie's visit to Israel with the headline, "The whale in the wall." It was classic Post, but it was still too much for former NJ Governor and current State Senator Richard Codey.
Codey, a Democrat who stepped in as governor THREE TIMES (but most memorably when James McGreevey stepped down after admitting a gay affair), said that the newspaper should be "ashamed" of the headline and other puns like Christie making a "huge impression" and bringing his "political heft," adding, "The article is insulting not only to the governor but to those who hold those sites sacred. It is also a slap in the face to journalists who take their work seriously." In other words, the Post hates Israel and the media?
His press release also stated, "Governor Christie and I have our disagreements, but no one should be subjected to the kind of grammar school innuendos and stupid puns that are splashed throughout the headline and story." According to the Star-Ledger, Christie appreciated Codey's defense and told reporters from Israel, "It’s unfortunate that the Post decided it wanted to go there. In the end as I’ve told people many times that kind of stuff doesn’t really bother me. If that’s the way they want to sell newspapers that’s up to them. But I can tell you this much: There’s no one over here who hasn’t taken me seriously in every way in terms of the message we brought."
