This year's local elections aren't all about Gracie Mansion. Lots of seats are up this year, actually, including the position of Brooklyn
Borough President. And the leading candidate for that gig, State Senator Eric Adams, just got a big boost when the current job holder, Marty Markowitz, endorsed him. Not bad for a campaign that officially only kicked off yesterday. Interestingly Adams, who could be the borough's first black president, apparently thinks the gig is about more than ribbon-cutting, trash-talking, bicycle songs and holiday cards!
"It’s all about improving people’s lives," Adams, whose fight to persuade boys to Stop The Sag and pull up their britches we'll never forget, explained in a recent interview to get his campaign rolling. "I must be bold. I believe my role as borough president must be as an advocate. And it must be a place where real resources are used."
Apparently Adams also really wants to bring more tourists into the borough, and is willing to send interns and part-time workers into Manhattan to try and persuade them to visit. "My goal is to make Brooklyn the hottest tourist attraction," he said. "They will come to Brooklyn if they know it exists."
Honestly we had no idea that Brooklyn, which is its own freaking brand these days, was still a hard sell for tourists? This isn't Staten Island we're talking about here! Still, Adams plans to bring even more midwesterners to the borough may soon happen: The State Senator's campaign has already raised nearly $420,000 from about 2,500 contributors. Marty Markowitz did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
