An elderly woman was fatally struck by a van on Houston Street on Friday. According to police, 73-year-old East Village resident Meipui Chow Leon was struck by a 2011 Ford Van while she was crossing on East Houston Street (near Clinton Street) from south to north in the crosswalk around 5 p.m. yesterday.
Cops say the driver was traveling southbound on Avenue B and attempted to make a left turn onto the eastbound lane of East Houston when they struck Leon. She suffered serious body trauma, and was transported by EMS to Bellevue Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The driver, whose name hasn't been released, remained on scene and was issued two summonses for failure to exercise due care and failure to yield.
