A 43-year-old cyclist died Wednesday night after colliding with a pedestrian in Central Park, according to the NYPD.

Police said the collision happened just before 6 p.m. on East Drive near 97th Street.

The cyclist, Bronx resident Salvador Nico Garcia, struck a pedestrian who was in a crosswalk, then fell off his bike and critically injured his head, officials said.

Garcia was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and pronounced dead.

The pedestrian, a 41-year-old man, sustained minor abrasions on his hand and refused medical care, according to police

NYPD data shows there was one death of a cyclist on a traditional bike so far this year through June 15, and 13 deaths of people on motorized two-wheelers, which include e-bikes and e-scooters. Those numbers were down from three and 29, respectively, by the same point last year.

2023 was the deadliest year for cyclists and e-bike riders in New York City in more than two decades, with most of those fatalities occurring among e-bike riders, the New York Times previously reported. The city recorded an overall decline in traffic deaths across transportation modes in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period in 2024, Mayor Eric Adams said in April.
